LOVEBITES High School Educational Program
Love Bites is an extremely successful school based Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault prevention program that began on the North Coast of NSW in response to some concerns at a particular school about their students who appeared to be becoming involved in abusive and unhealthy relationships with their peers. Love Bites is based on best practice standards for education programs as recommended by the Federal Government funded Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearing House and other leading academics in the area of violence against women.
The Love Bites program consists of two interactive education workshops on Relationship Violence and Sexual Assault and Consent, followed by a Creative Workshop which allows students to reflect on the information from the day, and to create a piece of art showing a message that they have taken from the sessions, which will then be displayed in the school, becoming the basis for student led campaigns within the school to challenge family violence in their community.
On the Central Coast, Love Bites has been operating since 2008. In 2016, Coast Shelter and the Central Coast Love Bites Steering Committee have actively worked to expand the footprint of Love Bites on the Central Coast. On the Central Coast we have 79 facilitators whom we trained in the most recent package of Love Bites which was rolled out in February 2016. The facilitators are workers from organisations including Government and non-Government services. These facilitators have all attended a two day training session delivered by the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN). 2008
