Coast Shelter has sourced some interesting information from various reputable sources which give us an insight into homelessness, financial stress and their causes
Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006 Census
From the 2006 ABS Census, we are able to determine the extent of homelessness in Australia. For more information on these statistics visit the ABS website and download the Australian Census Analytic Program: Counting the Homeless Report.
From the 2006 Census, we can estimate that every night:
105,000 people in Australia are homeless
27,000 people in NSW are homeless
56% of the homeless population are male
44% of the homeless population are female
9.1% of the homeless population are Indigenous

SAAP NDCA Report 2008-2008
From the SAAP (Supported Accommodation Assistance Program) NDCA (National Data Collection Agency) Report, we are able to determine some of the key factors impacting on homeless people in Australia. For more information on the SAAP NDCA, visit The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare website.
Top 3 reasons for seeking assistance from SAAP Service (2008-2009)
1. Domestic or family violence - 22%
2. Relationship or family breakdown - 10%
3. Other financial difficulty - 8%
Coast Shelter Statistics 2009-2010
In 2009-2010 Coast Shelter:
- provided 34,505 overnight beds
- accommodated 425 homeless people
- served 57,901 free meals in the Donnison Street Community Centre
Of the 2,126 people that came to us for assistance with accommodation, Coast Shelter:
- provided accommodation to 20%
- had to turn away 58% because we had no vacancies
- had to turn away 22% because their needs were too high e.g. mental illness, drug or alcohol addiction
